What is a well-baby check-up?

A well-baby check-up is a routine visit when your child is healthy. The pediatrician checks growth, development, nutrition and vaccines, and answers your questions.

These visits find problems such as poor weight gain, hip issues, anaemia, vision or hearing problems and speech delay before they become serious – when they are easiest to fix.

What is checked at every visit

01

Growth measurements

Weight, length or height, and head circumference (till 2 years) on WHO and IAP charts. The trend matters more than one number.

02

Head-to-toe examination

Heart and lungs, eyes and red reflex, ears, mouth and teeth, hips in babies, tummy, skin, spine and reflexes.

03

Development screening

Motor, speech, social and thinking skills for your child’s age.

04

Nutrition review

Feeding, appetite, iron-rich foods and the next stage of diet.

05

Vaccine status

Due doses given or planned, with reminders.

06

Your questions

Sleep, behaviour, teething, screen time – nothing is too small to ask.

Development

Developmental milestone screening

At each visit Dr. Neha checks age-appropriate milestones. If a skill is late, she suggests home activities or refers early to therapy – when it works best.

  • Social smile by 2 months
  • Sitting with support by 6 months
  • First meaningful words around 12 months
  • Walking alone by 18 months

More detail: growth & development.

  2. 2

    Bring records

Vaccination card, previous prescriptions and reports.

  3. 3

Any change in appetite, sleep, stools or behaviour since the last visit.

Why it matters

Why routine check-ups matter even when your child seems healthy

Many conditions – iron deficiency anaemia, vision or hearing problems, early growth faltering, undescended testes, hip problems – show no obvious symptoms at first.

Regular checks catch them while they are easier to treat, and give you a trusted record of your child’s growth over the years.

Don’t wait for the next check-up if your child has:

  • Fever in a baby under 3 months
  • Breathing difficulty or bluish lips
  • Refusing feeds or very few wet nappies
  • Unusual drowsiness or a seizure
  • Loss of skills already learned

In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital straight away. For guidance, call or WhatsApp +91 98184 07725.

Parent FAQs

Well-baby check-up FAQs

Short, clear answers to the questions parents ask Dr. Neha most often. Your own child’s situation is always best discussed in person.

Ask on WhatsApp

How often should my baby see a pediatrician in the first year?

About 7 to 8 times: in the first week, at 2 weeks, at 6, 10 and 14 weeks, and at 6, 9 and 12 months.

Is a check-up needed if my child is healthy?

Yes. Check-ups find hidden problems early and keep vaccines and growth on track.

Can the check-up be combined with a vaccine visit?

Yes. Most well-baby visits in the first two years happen together with vaccines.

How often should older children have a check-up?

Once a year from 3 years of age – a good time to review growth, eyes, teeth and fitness.

Can a growth check be done online?

Measurements need a clinic visit, but Dr. Neha can review home weights and growth questions by video.
